It's been a little quiet around SLAVE. But behind the scenes we've been super busy with the organization of something new and something bigger called:

ANDY'S Culture Market will take place Saturday the 17th of September in and around MC Theater. Expect more music, poetry, spoken word and dj's than ever before at a SLAVE event. We're also going to have an open air movie theater and an art, culture & food market.

The day after Queensday we expected visitors to be hungover, come in late, or even worse: to stay at home... But in the end it turned out to become another memorable SLAVE night. Thanks to the lovely singer Monica Alice who surprised us with her beautifull voice, an unexpected performance by resident Kain The Poet and yet another great co-operation with Africa In The Picture who showed a wonderful futuristic African film called Pumzi.

SLAVE FT. AITP

For this edition, we continue our collaboration with filmfestival Africa In The Picture. AITP, founded in 1985, grew out to be the largest African filmfestival in Europe.
This Sunday, we show a short movie by NFTA student Sjoerd Oostrik, Kadiogo. Sjoerd is constantly looking for people who are dealing with problems so big that they exceed their individual lives. Again and again he is fascinated by the question what one does when one loses the control over his or her life.

There will also be poetry, by our resident Kain the Poet, and adding two new names: Claudius the Krentenkoning and Unom Jg. They are both involved in Poetry Circle Nowhere, a company of performing poets who are contantly experimenting with the boundries of performance poetry.

MACHINE & RIETVELD SPECIAL

After a little break, this Sunday SLAVE: Arts and Culture Program will be continued with a special edition. In cooperation with Machine, students of the Rietveld Academy will present their results of the SLAVE flyers which they have manufactured!

This Sunday SLAVE: Arts and Culture Program will be featuring works by the graphic design dept. of the Rietveld Academy. Machine (Mark Klaverstijn & Paul du Bois-Reymond) have been teaching there for the last ten years and have always seeked connections between the school and the Amsterdam nightlife. This semester they have asked their students to design various visual identities for Slave, the results of which can be seen on the Supperclub's walls and screens this Sunday. Another group of students will take part in the already infamous VJ marathon with the title Save Our Soul.

This night we will show two shorts by Jennifer Lyon Bell. Jennifer is the creative force behind Blue Artichoke Films. She’s a Harvard graduate with a BA in Psychology, an MA in Film Studies from the University of Amsterdam and a lifelong passion for understanding sexuality.

Stage actors Mariah and Daniel play lovers every night, but their onstage romance lacks spark. One slow afternoon, they discover that today’s matinée performance will make or break both their careers. Daniel wants to make big changes, and Mariah starts to wonder: are Daniel’s suggestions reasonable? Or has he lost track of the boundary between actor and character? Rushed to the stage, in front of a live audience, they must figure it out together.

Nyotaimori (Japanese: 女体盛り, "female body presentation"), often referred to as "body sushi," is the extremely rare practice of serving sashimi or sushi from the body of a woman, typically naked.

Nyotaimori is a well-accepted and practiced tradition in Japan. It is recognized as an art form in Japan and has been part of the Geisha culture dating back hundreds of years...
It is based on the idea that sushi is made to delight
Promoters, eating participants, and apologists to the practice often say that nyotaimori is a form of art.

Live: Rive

Rive is the Dutch soul/rock/funk formation around Rivelino ‘Blackrockstar’ Rigters, the tall singer-guitarist with a firm and at the same time heavenly voice. The band RIVE stands for several cultures mixed together in one melting pot. From Indonesia to Suriname and from Holland to Aruba, they got it all in there and it’s just the same with their style. They were brought up with the old r&b/soul collection from their parents, but they also got the traditional Moluccan flows in them. Combined with the Afro-Caribbean rhythm ingrained by nature as they were raised with an island attitude, you can imagine it’s an interesting clash of styles. This Sunday we'll have a presentation of a book, start at 19:00!

Jitse Schuurmans is adventurer, anthropologist and author. De Versierkunsternaars, is his first novel.

They do exists. Pickup Artist: men that study the courting of women. For months Jitse Schuurmans immersed himself in this bizarre subculture, which resulted in an hilarious and often poignant novel.
This evening Jitse will present humorous sketches of his work in exchange with clear analyses of situations he encountered in the Seduction Community. And it goes without saying, he will shed a light on the seduction methods and techniques of Pickup Artist.

Because the book is written in Dutch, the presentation will be in Dutch as well. For all of you, book lovers, we're going to intall a real SLAVE bookstand, where you will be able to buy the book 'De Versierkunsteanaars'!

'Потерянная Душа' / 'The lost soul' is a collaboration of Alissa Nicolaï and Sophie Schulte who combined fashion, image and audio into one final product. Exactly one year ago, Inspired by some singing in an iPhone, they started brainstorming-sewing-dancing-filming and in no time they finalized a short film.
For this occasion Alissa Nicolaï will sing live to the video.

Alissa Nicolaï(17) is a young fashion designer who combines her creations with art, music and dance. Next to this she does photography, she paints, sings, dances and creates as much as she can.
Sophie Schulte(18) wants to extend her vision through her creavity and by doing the things she's good at.

There will also be a live performance by the band Payazen! Klezmer Band.
The klezmer trio Payazen has been entertaining audiences everywhere, from the streets to pubs to concert venues alike. The delicate touch of their chamber music aesthetic combines with their high energy level, guaranteed to make you dance and scream for more.

Karim Traïdia

First of all we'll have a film screening by director Karim Traïdia. This originally Algerian filmmaker studied sociology in Paris and moved to Holland in 1979. In 1991 he completed his studies at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy. Ever since, he has worked as a film-maker, and made films such as the highly acclaimed (2 "Gouden Kalveren") "The Polish Bride" (1998) and "Eilandgasten" (2005). During this night, SLAVE will be screening his graduation piece, "De Onmacht" (1991). Afterwards there will be time for questions! Movie starts at 18.30!

Latin American trio playing a variety of songs and dances from Spanish speaking countries like Cuba, Venezuela, Peru and Argentina. Singer Luna Zegers, who has a lot of experience with Spanish and Latin American music, is accompanied by two guitar players (Roel Goedhart and Ward Spanjers). This trio in its authentic form will play original styles like tango, bolero, vals criollo and son. Since I have their music on my Ipod, I would recommend the whole world to listen to this talented trio. Music that catches your heart, spins with it, covers it up with passion and puts it back into your chest. wauw.

Dear all, no, Grace Jones herself won't be here this night.. But thank goodness! We have our own Grace, Mister André D. Singleton, the weekly host of the evening. He's already compared himself to the glamorous Grace Jones once, and after sharing a night with my lovely free English dictionary I found out that GRACE is written on his chest. Or maybe it's written on his cute zebra leggings.

Anyway, Grace: "...is a delicate balance of words and actions that expresses our dignity and affirms the dignity of those around us. When we are gracious, we choose our words thoughtfully" .... "Grace is often a quality of leaders who can rise above conflict or competition, remaining calm and kind despite the chaos that swirls around them. Grace protects against reactivity and excess. This EASTER SUNDAY, the 4th of April, SLAVE presents a poetry and spoken-word edition, guest-programmed by Simone Zee (founder of the monthly spoken-word night Redefinition). The following young talents from across the world will be sharing some of their work with you at SLAVE:
The Boombox Effect is part of an international network of progressive artists building positive communities and independent culture. Baba Israel is a hip-hop emcee, poet, and beatboxer who has been featured on MTV, BET, and VH1.

The music will be provided by the Boogie Man DJ collective. Boogieman takes you on a ride across multiple genres, woven together by soulful vocals, lush piano chords, warm bass lines and boom-bap drum patterns. This is a night about intimacy and inspiration, about exploring and respectfully ignoring boundaries. This is a night about passion for music and desire to rock the floor and boogie down!
